I thought that all of these plates were replaced by the newer Empire Blue and White plates and Empire Gold plates. Strangest thing is that this was mounted on a 2nd-generation Prius, which was released after this style of plates ended production. Anyone have any ideas?

I know you can get them on classic vehicles over 25 years old in NYS. For the correct year vehicle you could get the old blue plates with yellow letters. Tis though...... Improper plate for the vehicle would be my first guess. I can’t remember if they’ll let you transfer a classic plate onto another vehicle....

I occasionally see people with plates that were retired in Illinois over 15 years ago. Sometimes they’re on a vehicle that’s newer than the plates. As for an explanation... I got nothin’.

Does New York not allow you to transfer plates from one vehicle to its replacement?

You can transfer Empire Blue and White plates to new cars. I know this because we transferred them to our 2014 328xi. But these... I think people may have been mandated to change them? They’re so rare nowadays...

The liberty plates were phased out in 2004 I believe. They were implemented in the mid 80s. I saw a set recently on an 88 Toyota pickup.
Info on historic and vintage plates....

Yes, but the liberty plates would only be issued now as a historic or vintage plates. A Prius would not qualify according to NYS DMV guidelines.
